Infra-red laser therapy has a vast range of applications and works in the majority (90%) of cases. The K-laser is very versatile and has protocols for all pets of all ages, from birds to lizards to Great Danes!
Working under permission and with the diagnosis from your vet, the laser helps:
-
reduce pain,
-
reduce swelling and inflammation,
-
increase range of motion of joints,
-
speed up healing of wounds,
-
prevent recurrence of injury,
-
and 'reset' over-sensitised nerves (chronic pain).
It also works very effectively pre- and post-surgery.
For example, a study published by the University of Oregon showed that just one treatment of laser therapy just before stifle (knee) surgery increased weight-bearing in the affected limb 8 weeks after surgery, compared to dogs having no laser treatment.
For long-term (chronic) pain, laser therapy offers a dimension of pain management that is totally unique. Laser therapy can actually help reduce & sometimes omit the need for pain medication altogether. As part of a holistic approach and using other supportive therapies such as physio and hydrotherapy, I have seen even advanced chronic pain be helped, and pet's quality of life restored.
Osteoarthritis and chronic pain is a particular area of interest for me, and I run a Golden Care Clinic at Upton Veterinary Centre. Please see my Osteoarthritis in Pets page for more information.
How many treatments does it take?
For short term (acute) conditions 1-6 treatments are normally sufficient. For longer-term (more than 3 months), it's more like 6-12 treatments. We tailor the protocol to your pet's condition. Pets tend to show visible signs of improvement after 2-4 sessions. The aim of laser therapy is to reach 'photobiomodulation' which means we have repaired the cells to better than they were before the injury occurred.
What do treatments feel like?
Treatments feel like being in the sun, warm and pleasant. Sometimes tingling can occur however, no sedation is necessary. By the 3rd or 4th session my patients normally look forward to treatment and really relax! Treatments take 3-8 minutes to apply. For complex conditions, a full half-hour is needed as we treat compensating joints too.
Are there any side effects or risks?
K-Laser has been used for nearly 30 years and very few side effects have ever been reported. Laser therapists are trained to a very high standard and hence the laser has a very high safety margin. Part of contacting your vet is to check certain contraindications are not applicable, for example, joints which have had a steroid injection within 7 days cannot be lasered, nor if cancer is suspected.
Will my insurance cover the laser treatment?
Yes. Always check with your provider before we start to be sure.
